Safeguarding Backup Power

Safeguarding backup power is one of the most important ways to ensure that hospitals and other critical healthcare facilities can continue to support vital functions during a prolonged power outage. Many factors contribute to the reliability of backup power including proper maintenance of generators, having a sufficient supply of generator fuel, and ensuring that generator service technicians can gain access to generators in a disaster area.

A key focus for Powered for Patients will be identifying and sharing best practices in the area of safeguarding backup power.

Among the best resources available for facility managers responsible for the maintenance and operation of emergency power systems is a Checklist developed by FEMA that details the critically important steps facility personnel can take before, during and after disaster to help minimize the risk of emergency power failures.
